and RNA, repair and regenerate cell components, and
foster cell proliferation. In addition to building proteins
like collagen and elastin, ATP is critical to maintaining
homeostasis for cell stability and facilitating healing.
Two commonly performed treatments by estheticians,
LED and microcurrent, assist in producing ATP. LED
uses phototherapy, generating photons to stimulate the
production of ATP. Microcurrent mimics a low level
of electrical energy to stimulate the body’s tissues for
rejuvenation, healing or repair.
3. Don’t Forget About the Body
Body treatments go way back and for good reason. As
body treatments are still popular in many resort and day
spas, there is not enough effort or time spent on areas
of the skin besides the face. It is not uncommon to hear
clients complain of sagging skin on their neck, arms
and knees; sun-damage on their décolleté and hands;
or dry skin on all areas of the body. So why as skin care
specialists are we only focused on the face? Adding
on body treatments is a win-win for everyone. By not
incorporating these into our menus, we are failing in our
attempt to achieve ultimate satisfaction from our clients.
Besides the typical wraps and body scrubs that are done,
clients are getting skin tightening, fat shrinking and
cellulite reducing procedures done in a medical setting.
4. Know The Causes of Dark Circles
Dark circles can appear for several reasons. Overall,
they are from hyperpigmentation, vascularity and/or
shadowing. Hyperpigmentation around the eyes can be
caused by genetics and is typically seen on darker skin
types. It can also be post-inflammatory or sun-induced,
just like other areas of the body. There is little that can
be done for hyperpigmentation under the eyes, although
some improvement can be seen with skin lightening
products. Chemical exfoliation and/or laser treatments
may be performed by medical professionals depending
on the skin type. Pooling of blood beneath the delicate
skin of the eye is another cause. This is mostly linked
to genetics or by leakage of small capillaries. When
pooled blood is suspected, products rich in vitamin K
and/or arnica have the potential to reduce the collection
of blood. One not-so obvious cause of dark circles is
from shadows that can occur from hollowing. Medical
professionals can reduce this shadowing with the use
of soft tissue fillers. If a client is not ready for a medical
procedure, the use of camouflage makeup is the next
best thing. Highlighting the shadowed areas and
contouring the area around the hollow can make a big
1. Address Lifestyle
The lifestyle choices that one makes are as important
as the products and treatments that are applied to the
skin. This applies to diet, exercise, sleep and sun exposure.
Healthy skin comes with smart food choices; think low
in sugar and high in antioxidant rich foods like fruits
and vegetables. Staying hydrated makes the skin appear
plumper, which make wrinkles look less prominent.
Physical exercise can also have an anti-aging effect.
For example, exercising and being more active can
lower stress levels and reduce inflammation, which is
one way to help the body and skin remain youthful.
Proper sleep, which in most cases is seven to eight
hours a night, also reduces stress levels and allows the
body time to repair itself. As always, our No. 1 lifestyle
measure for the skin is protecting the skin and the
eyes from the sun. Not only is it important to wear and
reapply sunscreen, but to use protective sunglasses as
well. The eyes are the first to show signs of aging.
2. Stimulate ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is the source of
energy for every cell in our bodies. We produce less
ATP with age, which inhibits cells from performing at
peak function. In this way, ATP is somewhat like the
fuel in a car; without it, the car can’t go very far. ATP is
